Common Kinds of Cranes Used to Move Loads

A construction site often requires various heavy material, machinery, and equipment to be moved from one place to another. More often than not, there isn’t enough space for a truck to frequently navigate through the site to transport these materials. It then makes sense to use cranes and move items at levels often higher than the proposed building. And then you have some cranes that are smaller for lighter loads or for home use.

Here are some of the most significant types of cranes:

  • Gantry Girders
  • Goliath Crane
  • Portable Crane
  • Semi Gantry Crane

Gantry Girders

In factories, sometimes you need to have cranes that are mounted on bridges and steadily move along a path, carrying loads from one point to another. Bridges are built across the factory yards and stand with the support of gantry girders. Wheels and rails allow the bridge to move along the girder, and can often support more than one bridge at a time. Gantry girders are usually made of rolled steel sections, forming beams and channels together. The challenge is in strengthening the centre portion of gantry girders to bear external weight and its own weight in an effective way.

Goliath Cranes

Goliath cranes also known as gantry cranes, are overhead cranes with either a single or a double girder system, supported by legs that move independently on a rail system, wheels or on a track. Goliath cranes are often used outdoors or beneath an existing overhead crane system. Large goliath cranes run on a specific rail track in a specific work area, while smaller ones move on wheels or castors and can be moved around the factory.

Portable Cranes

Portable cranes are frequently used to transport smaller items, weighing 10 tons or less. And hence, this is a great choice for indoor or home use, when there is a need to hoist materials to higher floors in order to avoid narrow walkways. Portable cranes are compatible to be combined with motorized or manual hoists and increase your work efficiency greatly.

Semi Gantry Crane

semi gantry crane is one of the most popular kinds of cranes seen in construction sites where very heavy things need to be lifted and moved quickly. Since the crane can be operated easily and because it is actually very efficient, the semi gantry crane could save your business a great deal of money on labour costs. This crane has a hybrid design with one side being a Goliath crane where the load carriage is travelling on racks that are mounted on the ground, and the other side being an EOT crane where the load carriage is travelling on bracket-mounted gantry rail. Semi gantry cranes are commonly used indoors, in tool rooms or where particular machines requiring crane use, are lined up against the wall.
